Classic SharePoint

Classic SharePoint refers to the original version of SharePoint. It includes features such as team sites, document libraries, and lists, which have been the foundation for many intranet sites and document management systems. It’s known for its structured, hierarchical system of site collections and sub-sites, which resemble a folder directory system.

Key features of Classic SharePoint include the ability to customise the user interface with CSS, jQuery, and other scripting options. This allows organisations to tailor their SharePoint sites to meet specific needs. Classic SharePoint also supports a wide range of content management capabilities, including document libraries, lists, and on-premises hosting, which were essential for businesses before the advent of cloud computing.

But, the Classic SharePoint interface and functionality is often considered outdated, especially in comparison to newer workplace tools and systems. It’s reliance on server-side rendering also makes it slower and less responsive than more contemporary solutions. Additionally, the complex site architecture can sometimes lead to difficulties in managing and scaling the platform as organisations grow.

As technology evolves, so does SharePoint. The introduction of Modern SharePoint marked a significant shift from the Classic experience. Modern SharePoint offers a more intuitive, responsive design that is optimised for mobile devices and aligns with modern web standards. It moves away from the hierarchical site structure to a flat architecture, where each site is an independent entity, simplifying navigation and management.

Organisations can continue to use Classic SharePoint, but it is recommended to transition to Modern SharePoint, which offers a more intuitive, flexible and mobile-friendly user experience. It also integrates seamlessly with the broader suite of Microsoft 365 applications, providing a cohesive and enhanced user experience. The modern experience includes updated lists and libraries, communication sites, and team sites that leverage Microsoft 365 Groups for easier permission management.
